Question
My son had severe jaundice at next day of birth. His jaundice reached to level 29.6. Doctors did 2 times transfusion with this high jaundice history. Will he be delayed in any milestone? Can he do everything well in time? Can any adverse effect on his body?
Answer
Jaundice at the time of birth that required exchange transfusion twice can lead to problems later on life. Such high levels of billirubin may affect the brain hence the transfusion is required at birth to prevent brain damage. However, the high billirubin may lead to cerebral palsy, hearing defects or even learning disability, Your son needs to be followed up diligently for his developmental milestones and should undergo early intervention programmes.
