Question
My 11 month old son seems to have a lump inside his back on the right side of the spine. It's barely noticeable, and doesn't feel like a marble or anything. It's about the diameter of a half dollar, but doesn't feel like anything different than the rest of his back. It just is a little more convex there. He's had regular pediatric care during and after pregnancy. I just noticed it today. Is this something I should be worried about? He's due for his 1 yr checkup in 5 weeks, is this too long to wait to get it checked?
Answer
If it is too painful, increasing in size, or becomes too hard, consult a doctor at the earliest. If it is the same size and not causing any problems, it may a benign swelling such as lipoma, sebaceous cyst, dermal cyst etc. Consult a pediatric surgeon if it increases rapidly or causes problems.
