Question
My wife is pregent of about 8.2 months old. the recent Ultrascan shows dilation of left ventricle system which found around 10 mm. Is it indication of Child Hydrocephalus? If it is then what are the care should be taken after birth of child?
Answer
A lateral ventricle size of >10mm in the 2nd trimester is suggestive of ventriculomegaly. Ventriculomegaly leading to increased water content and decrease brain matter is called hydrocephalus. A child with ventriculomegaly needs serial USG to see whether the ventriculomegaly is worsening. If the child has progressive disease, maternal blood may have to be screened for infections, scan may be required to check for other malformations and maybe the fetal amniotic fluid may be required for karyotpyoing. The prognosis depends upon the worsening size and various other defects.
