Beverages form an important part of a child's diet. Type of beverage taken depends on what is available, cultural practices, taste preference, health and how safe it is to drink it. Beverages are also important sources of energy, macronutrient and Micronutrient intake in the child. The authors undertook this study to determine the contribution of beverages to the dietary energy and estimated macro- and micronutrient intake to the diet of young schoolchildren in Guatemala. Third and fourth grade 449 urban Guatemalan school-children (from both public and private schools) aged 8-10 years old were asked to recall all beverages, foods and snacks consumed over a 24-h period with help of pictures. Eleven main categories of beverages were identified. The contribution of each of the 11 beverage categories to energy, macro- and micronutrients was evaluated.

Results: Coffee was the beverage consumed in the greatest quantity, followed by plain water. Beverages contributed a mean energy contribution of 418 +/- 26 kcal (21.5% of total dietary energy) and one-third of the dietary carbohydrate. Fortified drinks contributed 55% of total vitamin A intake, 38% of vitamin C intake, 21% of zinc intake and 19% of calcium intake. Milk contributed for 10% of vitamin D intake. These results show the importance of drinks to Nutrition especially the fortified ones.
